Kisaan Maitreya is a brand brought to you by the social enterprise initiative Maitreya Agro/Mai Mati Foundation. It aims to bring organically grown foods from India's vast farmlands to your table. The initiative was founded in 2014 by Kavita Mudhoot Kowshik and Meera Jamnagarwala as a response to the agrarian crisis gripping farmers across the country.

In 2015, Maharashtra lost over 3,000 farmers to suicide as farming practices and natural factors create an untenable economic and social environment for agriculturists. Kavita, a Post Grad from TISS, Facilitator, Trainer, and a Certified Social Accountant & Social Auditor intends to change this by making the farmer the central innovator and wealth creator in transforming the rural landscape.

Kavita and her dedicated team are spread across 30 villages in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. They provide grass root level training to convert farmers to organic methods of farming. Using her considerable experience in NGO’s and business entrepreneurship, Kavita and her team also help to market, package and open distribution channels for their products, thus turning farmers into successful entrepreneurs with a sustainable source of livelihood. Kisaan Maitreya promotes chemical-free farming, vermi- composting and organic manure. This is a win-win for both farmers and consumers alike as sustainable food sources convert into healthier meals, higher awareness and improved lifestyle in cities and villages.

To maximize outreach, Kisaan Maitreya partners with many local organic farming organizations and KVKs (Krushi Vigyanik Kendras), in states like Assam and Kerala. Kisaan Maitreya has revived products like Black Rice, Emmer Wheat, Millet and traditional varieties of rice in states like Maharashtra, Kerala and Assam that had long lost out to commercial varieties.

Kisaan Maitreya products are certified organic by PGS- India, a participatory organic guarantee program by the Department of Agriculture and Co-operation, Government of India.
